History: Serial nature that Detective Conan has, most of Mitsuhiko's 'revealed' background doesn't actually add up to much, but that's certainly not to say it isn't there. Rather, what's important to Mitsuhiko's story just happens to only take a minor position in Conan's--the protagonists'--tale. Likewise, much of what happens throughout the series doesn't directly concern Mitsuhiko himself, and thus isn't mentioned below. Given that the series is well over 800 chapters long, this is probably for the best! On another note, being that the series is so long despite claiming to still be occurring within a year, time is quite fluid... Case in point, Mitsuhiko has 'apparently' had at least three separate instances of starting the summer vacation (despite... Only apparently experiencing one.). Back on track now...
Before meeting Conan, he's a student at Teitan Elementary, and appears to keep relatively to himself, reading at the side. He has an elder sister named Asami (about 10 years senior), and his parents are both school teachers, which likely contributed to these habits. After making a skeptical comment concerning supernatural hauntings in regard to his classmates'--Ayumi, Genta, and Conan--conversation about a 'haunted mansion' however, he was dragged along to explore the place, an event that would lead him to become friends with the others. (The mansion, of course, wasn't haunted--the tale was in fact a cover for an old homicide case.) One could say this was the moment that the 'Detective Boys' (Shonen Tantei-Dan) were formed... However technically, this would come later.
Out of the many (MANY) cases that the 'Shonen Tantei' have been involved in, there are a small few of considerable note. The long unsolved mystery of the 'haunted mansion' is of course one, having led Mitsuhiko to properly become friends with his classmates to begin with. Not long after this case, a mix-up of bags while attending a 'Kamen Yaiba' event at Touto Tower would lead to a 'treasure hunt'--a coded map which turned out to legitimately be connected to the location of stolen gold coins. The owner of the note--a group of Italian thieves--thus used the children to find the gold, following from a distance and tying them up once they came to the end. Even so, with the help of Conan, Mitsuhiko and the others would manage to escape by dropping the bags of gold on top of the thieves, running to the nearest police station to report them. This case in particular can be seen as the 'origin' of the Shonen Tantei Dan, moving from a group of friends into a semi-official club within the school.
Following that 'case', he and the others would also begin to meet the other characters. Aside from meeting 'Ran-neesan' (whom Conan lived with), they would also meet Agasa, a professor and inventor. Agasa would not only invent and gift to them the 'Detective Boy's badges' (which included a tracer signal to Conan's glasses, and a radio connection between each of them), but also a wrist-watch with a built in flashlight. These devices would help on future cases multiple times, whether to track others down, or simply to relay messages to the others, easily becoming the tools that saved his life and the others. With each case that was solved, a heavier interest in 'Detective work' would build, and with it, a growing experience in what it took to solve cases in the way Conan did.
It would be again relatively early in their 'casework' that the fifth addition to their class came along, soon after their class teacher was replaced by a young 'Kobayashi-sensei'. Joining the class would be 'Haibara Ai', a half foreign girl who as it turned out was staying with Agasa. Though cool and mature in attitude, Mitsuhiko would quickly develop a crush on her--though it is only very recently that she has been particularly friendly with him, and only somewhat less recently that she even started to use his crush to her advantage in asking for requests and assistance during Conan's cases.
Focusing on the proper timeline, Mitsuhiko's intelligence and growing experience would come in very handy when a camping trip with Agasa went awry. After finding a Limestone Cave, Ayumi would convince him and the others to explore inside (Agasa and Ai would be back at the tent). Genta, who ran ahead, would then catch sight of three murderers disposing of a body, and in order to help the others escape, Conan would be shot. Despite his wound, he would guide the group from Genta's back, giving tips and ideas on how to stay ahead of their pursuers. When Conan lost consciousness before giving the answer to the riddle of the cave however, it would be Mitsuhiko who solved it--after conversing with the others through theory after theory, and drawing a diagram of the cave in his notebook, he would realize that the riddle referred to the Shoji game. Through this, they would escape to the entrance, which was surrounded by police and medical personnel, allowing Conan to be saved, and the criminals to be captured.
Mitsuhiko would go on many camping trips with his friends, following this--on one, he would admit to finding Conan's knowledge amazing, and soon after find himself and Haibara on the run from a hunter for fear of their lives. In the end, it would turn out that what they thought was a hunt due to seeing a body, was otherwise however; the man had killed a hunter who had been preparing to shoot a bear, and to scare the children away from the creature for the sake of their lives, fired another shot. The man of course would be arrested, but regardless, Mitsuhiko and Haibara escaped safely.
Murders would not be the only events that Mitsuhiko and the others helped with however--in particular, they would manage to thwart the kidnapping of an American named 'James Black', whose only clue back to them had been 'P & A' (decoded as 'Panda', referring to the colouration of police cars.). Many other victims still would be found before it was too late, saved from either circumstance or tragic misunderstanding. Regardless of the case, they would often encounter the police officers of the region, and as time passed, Mitsuhiko would thus come to know them rather well. It comes to the point where he and his friends even attempt to play match-maker between two of the officers, who appear to be 'fated' to be together!
It would be foolish to assume, however, that all his 'history' is mystery cases and murder now--during the early summer, after overhearing Ayumi and Haibara talk about how they want to see a firefly, he puts all his efforts into finding where fireflies live, and catching one in secret. The effort results in him becoming stuck--he cannot open his palms to call the others, or he releases the firefly, and he cannot put it in the habitat he created for the same reason. After an escaped convict crosses paths with him, the incident ends with him opening his hands accidentally... But in front of the girls nonetheless, who are able to watch the firefly fly away while the authorities apprehend Mitsuhiko's captor.
Further after this, and other fishing trips and stargazing nights, would be an encounter with none other than the Phantom Thief, 'KID'--the master of disguise would follow them through an abandoned trick-house, making moves to spare their lives before later taking off before their very eyes... ...Though of course later, after a challenge reply from the thief to his challenger remarks that the 'time for child's play is over', he would have his chance to meet the thief again. The Shonen Tantei would be called to help guard the 'Kirin's Horn', as supposedly, Kaitou KID would be unable to disguise himself as either of them. Needless to say, the thief would prove the claim wrong, and even use the children as his unwitting accomplices in the theft, but it was certainly an interesting experience for him.
That particular heist would not occur until later on however. Before this, there would be shellfish digging, movies, 'haunted houses'... Many other harmless events which resulted in some sort of murder or kidnapping, including even an interview prepared for the group by their school teacher. With their interviewer killed, the event was of course cancelled--however, as a result, Kobayashi-sensei would declare herself their 'manager' (not that it seems to do much outside leading her to meet with one of the police officers.). This could perhaps be why the teacher arranged a game between the class in the manner that she did. In order to come to better know two of the later additions to the class, a 'quiz' would be set up, one which Mitsuhiko himself played an impressive role in solving. Despite fumbling somewhat, he would come to decipher the majority of the riddle with the help of his friends, thus successfully completing Kobayashi's 'game'.
Yet another meeting resulting from a case would be 'Okiya Subaru', encountered when the apartment building that a classmate had invited them to for a mystery burned to the ground. As it happened, the classmate had been noting one of the tenants acting suspiciously--and that very tenant turned out to be the arsonist, soon arrested for his acts. Okiya in the meantime, would come to live next door to the Professor, thus coming to see and know Mitsuhiko and the kids a little better with time himself.
Relations with other characters aside, the occurrence of murders around the Shonen Tantei would eventually reach a 'suspicious' point, or at least the point where investigating officers commented on the common happenings. The more that cases occurred, the more he and the others tried to do themselves, albeit with advice from others, and in recent cases in particular, Mitsuhiko has found himself being of more and more use to Conan and Haibara's 'work' (when he's there). His researching 'emergency codes' would allow Conan to relay messages to Mitsuhiko and the others during a kidnapping situation in particular, but, just as his pro-activeness helps things, it also hinders...
In the most recent chapters, his actions nearly result (not that he realizes) in Haibara's death, when he sends video footage of her adult form to Kogoro in hopes of identifying the 'woman who saved everyone' from a fire he and the other kids were trapped in. This video would lead those searching for Haibara to the Mystery Train which he and the others boarded, and thus, to a great battle of wits between 'black' and 'white'...not that he was aware of this, of course. To Mitsuhiko, they simply never found out who the lady was, and after an unexpected murder case which was followed by a 'fire', he and the others would leave the train with a somewhat tired Haibara in tow.
The mystery train case is not the end however. While it is the most major event according to the series main plot, to Mitsuhiko, it is merely 'another case'. Following this case would be an incident which resulted in himself and his friends being trapped in a refrigerated truck. After suffering from hypothermia due to a lack of coat (given to Haibara, whose sweater had been ruined earlier), he and Haibara wind up sharing the coat (much to his flustered alarm), before events lead into their escape. Further murder cases occur from here, including a false suicide, and a murder during a hanami (flower viewing) trip as well--
But it is with a relatively happy 'end' that this History-Thus-Far finishes with. The latest cases Mitsuhiko has experienced are both involving the very calico cat which started the case of the refrigerated truck. After successfully identifying 'Taii-kun's' true owner from a crowd of three, Mitsuhiko and the children are invited to visit the cat one last time before it's given to another person. Instead they find Taii's owner unconscious--beaten over the head, and made to appear as an accidental event. What was nearly murder would become otherwise, however. Taii's ownership would bounce about slightly, and in the end, return back to the very place where they first met the cat!
At the cafe under Conan's apartment home. From that point, he has yet to appear in any cases; given the time of year, it can be assumed that he expects it to be early spring, or 'before class graduation'. With how vague the matter of time is within the series, it could even be that it's during the week long break between grades!
as it is, second grade suits him far more than first
Appearance: Right Here!Personality: Being six years old, Mitsuhiko is 'childish'. This is not childish in the sense of acting younger than he is--if anything he could be seen as slightly ahead of his peers, a fact that is certainly overshadowed by the intense maturity displayed by two classmates in particular. What it means simply is that he still has that child's-nature, which is to be expected, given that he is one. He gets excited about things like 'treasure hunts' and 'camping trips', about shows and movies involving great big monsters, where the hero saves the day; upset and somewhat teary eyed when things go wrong, when he's hurt, or scared--and, despite what he will often say in full confidence about ghosts and monsters 'not existing', he is indeed quite afraid of those sorts of things.
Yet, despite this 'typically child-like' nature of his, there are a number of things that stretch beyond this, and indeed beyond the very scope of what someone his age should act like. Closer within the realms of reality, Mitsuhiko is a very organized, intelligent, and polite child. He is incredibly responsible, already opening his own bank account, and realizing the importance of saving what he has for later. He has been taught to treat adults and elders with respect, using only the most proper honorifics and pronouns, and also to be kind and courteous to others. Indeed, for the most part his moments of irritation seem to accompany a small level of discomfort and unease. Noted exceptions are either for more 'minor' incidents (Such as being on the losing team of a set of soccer games five times in a row), or for matters concerning his friends (in which case his discomfort may be tossed aside entirely because he is no longer thinking of himself.). On that note, Mitsuhiko is a rather self-less boy for his age. He has more than once made motions to save his friends with their lives in mind rather than his--that is to say, going back for them, or sacrificing something of his for them, when he himself could have been fine otherwise. (He has even collapsed from hypothermia as a direct result of this, having given his jacket to the classmate and friend Haibara Ai while they were trapped in a refrigerated truck.)
Mitsuhiko is a fairly intelligent boy as well, going along with his organization skills. He tends to think ahead, planning for situations relatively well (IE, bringing a compass and map to a perceived treasure hunt), and taking notes on things in case the information is needed later. If he's interested in a subject, and cannot find the information on it himself, he'll ask someone he trusts for help in researching it, so that he can still have that knowledge for later. Obviously, he isn't a genius--indeed, while he tends to be slightly more careful and thoughtful than others his age, his mental power is still within the relative limits of a first grade boy. However, he has a habit of gathering knowledge, and his growing skills of observation mean that he could well come to achieve a similar degree of intellect and power as that of the 'Gosho Four' (A fan-name for the three detectives in the series, Hattori Heiji, Kudou Shinichi, and Hakuba Saguru, plus the phantom thief Kaitou KID).
Along those lines, come the more unsettling parts of his personality--while Mitsuhiko is a bright, and overly cheery boy, he has become somewhat desensitized to the sight of death and crime. While his initial response to a corpse is still shock, this shock fades incredibly quick, an extremely unsettling thing when compared to his former reaction to scream bloody murder (excusing the pun). He is able to slip almost immediately into 'detective mode', helping Conan to investigate the crime alongside his friends, searching and questioning to a relatively impressive degree before often assisting to demonstrate the resolution of the case. Such are the consequences of continually being exposed to corpses and murder cases, it seems...
That certainly isn't to say he's careless however, and indeed, while he seems to lack the terror when investigating a crime, he certainly does not completely lack fear when fleeing a murder, or when being met unexpectedly with a murder
weapon. He also feels heavily for others, recognizing their emotions and reasoning with considerable ease, and spotting when those he knows somewhat well are acting 'different' or 'off'. When it comes to those he looks up to, and trusts, he is often hesitant to question them on topics he himself is not experienced in, and moreover, rather likely to fall quiet when what he has been told is 'right' conflicts with what they are doing, in a manner that concerns the safety of others. (When it comes to conflicting with 'what is right', and the matter is otherwise trivial, he will most certainly voice his thoughts, however.)
For those he has a crush on in particular, we can see his kindness, and politeness. He respects their space, averting gaze should the situation need (despite obviously lacking the knowledge of exactly why it is /wrong/), and gets angry when others don't do the same. Somewhat adorably enough, to that end he has admitted to being worried about the nature of his crush, wondering if having a crush on two different girls is 'two timing'.
Overall, these things taken into consideration, Mitsuhiko is a very intelligent and kind little boy. He gets excited and cheery about many of the things one would associate with children, and when pressured or flustered tends to get jittery, or even scared, speaking without thought. Given space, he can think clearly, and as he has a habit of taking notes and gathering knowledge, has the potential to take his thoughts to places that even some adults cannot, thus 'outsmarting them' in a sense. He is also rather selfless, and respectful of others--but not to the point of rolling over for them, as he will most certainly defend his own thoughts on a matter, if he feels he knows what he's talking about, and more importantly tends to realize when he's being used. Mitsuhiko has a somewhat apologetic and mischievous nature all the same--he has more than once done things that he knows he would get in trouble for, but while visibly uneasy about those things, did so anyway with the prompting of his friends. This shows that, despite proving a few times that he himself is capable of leading, he is also easily influenced by those he knows and cares for.
Abilities: Mitsuhiko is very much a 'normal six year old child', what with his intelligence still being within his age range for the most part. He's not particularly strong, but he's not frail either; he can climb trees quite easily, and enjoys the sports events with his friends after all!
Other: - He dislikes carrots most, eating them last--if he has to at all.
- He weighs around 44lbs (20kg), but his height hasn't canonically been revealed. This is the same for his birthday.
- Though it's hard to tell, his eyes appear to be blue when the colour is revealed.
- He has exactly five freckles on each cheek!
- Despite the growing interest he has in Detective and Police work, he has time and time again proven that he still dreams of being able to see Outer Space, and seems to hold a heavy interest in the stars.
- Mitsuhiko also seems to enjoy scientific and historical subjects on his own time, as well as 'general subjects' (folklore and riddles, etc.)--as his parents are both teachers, this isn't surprising.
- His favorite show and comic is 'Kamen Yaiba' (comparable to the Power Rangers and other related series), while his favorite movie series is 'Gomera' (rather like Godzilla).
- Apparently, Mitsuhiko is fond of 'French Cuisine'. He may just ask for it to appear more mature however.
SAMPLESFirst Person: [
Mitsuhiko why are you using the phone for diary entries...]
The sky here looks different from the sky I'm used to at night--the stars are in completely different places! I'm going to find a book with a star-map on it; I think that the sky here is supposed to be the same as the sky over America, but I want to check, just to make sure!
...Stargazing is really fun too I think! I don't have my telescope here, but the sky is really clear here--it's like when you go camping, or when it's winter. The stars are always easier to see when you're not in a city, and when it's winter, it's even easier. Of course, there are lots of stars you can see with your eyes, so I can do that for now, I think. It's really bright! Mn...
...I wish I could show Haibara, and Ayumi-chan, and everyone...
Third Person: He sits on the floor of his new room with a rather determined expression on his face, with a number of items laid out before him. Mitsuhiko has of course been briefed long ago on where he is--he read the letter he got after all, even if he
was a little confused by a few of the words. Since he can't get to his real home, and to his sister and parents and all of his friends however, it's taken him until now to really sit and think about things.
If Conan were here, he thinks, it would have been the first thing Conan did--and while he's wrong, the thought is still there.
Asking himself 'what Conan' or 'what Haibara' would do in this situation is what led him here, with everything he has.
...And also a notepad and pencil he found in the kitchen. "Let's see... First there is, the 'five keys'," he starts, looking to the ring in question. One for each of the gates, and one for the house (and car). "Next there is... The 'lease', and 'credit card'..." The lease for him is less a lease and more a letter--it isn't as though he himself can own a house (you have to be an adult for that!), but it had a lot of other information that was probably important, so he's keeping it close and re-writing what seems 'key' into the notebook. The credit card itself is a different story--it seems daunting in fact, to have that much money all of a sudden, even if it took him a while to figure out how much that was in 'yen'.
"Ehehe... I'll have to get used to that, won't I... ...Mn. Next is, the 'Cel Phone', and a 'Student ID'!" While he seems somewhat cheery as he says this, his tone and expression say otherwise. The phone is nothing like the phone he has at home. And the ID card is proof that someone got a picture of his face, and he doesn't remember getting his picture taken, but...
His face crinkles with unease, and while he's starting to feel scared, he doesn't let the rest of it show on his face. Because the ID card has a smiling 'him' staring back, and right now, he can't think of how that could be possible at all.
OTHERHousing Request?: If I could I would have been a smart aleck and said something like '4869' but the numbers only go up to 1500 OH WELL. If he could end up with one or two people with scientific interests that'd be cool but otherwise toss him wherever!
Did you read the rules and FAQ?: Yup yup!
Would you like your application to be unscreened?: UHHHHH... Eh leave it unscreened I've got nothing to hide
